Maybe you noticed, maybe you didn’t. Maybe you’re not reading this. Shame on you.

Up at the top is a new logo. Neat, huh?

I gotta be honest, I’ve been struggling the design concept of a logo for Roninspoon for years. I’ve gone back and forth on how to present if a number of times, and even enlisted the assistance of friends and colleagues. The tricky bit wasn’t encapsulating the idea of Roninspoon, but doing so in a way that was succinct enough for a logo. Most of my design ideas included the traditional samurai kabuto helmet, complete with the sweeping Fukigaeshi and shikoro. This is the kind of thing that’s foundationally evocative of the samurai, but is an elaborate and detailed bit of laminated scale armor. That’s not especially easy to render at a scale and resolution that would be appropriate for a logo.

On a whim, I asked Jim K Benton to draw something for me in a reddit AMA. If you’re not familiar with his work, Jim is a talented and prolific illustrator with a keen sense of humor. I find his comics almost universally hilarious, and I’ve been telling my family and friends that Jim is my spirit cartoonist. It turns out that Jim is also very charitable and gracious, and responded with the illustration you now see at the top of the page, as well as permission to use the art.

Jim has a new book out titled Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff like That. And Cats. I’ll be picking up a copy from him at San Diego Comic Con in a couple weeks, where he’ll be signing with his publisher NBM Publishing at booth #1714. If you can’t make it to San Diego, the book is available now from Amazon.com, ibooks.com and Barnesandnoble.com.
